Once, a reader called me to ask if I had ever heard of a woodpecker known as "shirt-tail bird." I had never heard that, so I checked the "Audubon Society Encyclopedia of Birds" and discovered that indeed, this is a colloquial name for the red-headed woodpecker. The bird has several other names, including flag bird, half-a-shirt, jelly coat, patriotic bird and white shirt.

A Gilroy man has been fined $7,000 and ordered to serve 100 hours of community service for killing birds. California Department of Fish and Game wardens found 335 dead birds, including ducks, geese and migratory birds, on Peter Ignatius Ciraulo's property off Pacheco Pass Highway.
