Once, a reader called me to ask if I had ever heard of a woodpecker known as "shirt-tail bird." I had never heard that, so I checked the "Audubon Society Encyclopedia of Birds" and discovered that indeed, this is a colloquial name for the red-headed woodpecker. A Gilroy man has been fined $7,000 and ordered to serve 100 hours of community service for killing birds.
