The annual local Juneteenth celebration is scheduled for June 16 at Bessemer Park. Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement by Union Gen. Gordon Granger of the Emancipation Proclamation to the slaves in Galveston, Texas.

Juneteenth basketball tournament scheduled

Macomb’s Juneteenth celebration set for June 16 in Chandler Park

The Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center at Western Illinois University will host its Juneteenth celebration Saturday, June 16 in Macomb's Chandler Park to mark the national end of slavery.
