For many animal shelters, spring triggers a struggle for life. As animal populations increase, facilities overflow. The Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter has room for more than 300 animals at their facility, but once capacity is reached, animals must be euthanized daily to create room.

Have you ever wonder what it is like to be a prisoner in your own home? For dozens of animals at the Rowlett Animal Shelter that is an unfortunate reality. The animals sit in cages patiently waiting for the right person to parole them and give them a better home.

Joey, a 5-year-old orange-and-white cat, sat alone in his cage Friday afternoon at the Cascades Humane Society. His cage wouldn't normally be in the hallway, but there's no other room. The society, at 1515 Carmen Drive, is full of cats — it's at capacity with more than 60.
