Boulder scientists: Frequency combs may redefine the second

Combs are usually affiliated with barbers and roosters, but physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder have created a new "frequency comb" able to turn infrared light into extreme ultraviolet radiation.

JILA scientists confirm first 'frequency comb' to probe ultraviolet wavelengths

This is an artist's conception of JILA's extreme ultraviolet (EUV) frequency comb. The original light source is a pulsed infrared laser, which is used to create a train of attosecond-long pulse bursts at EUV wavelengths (the bright white spot in the distance).
