Ah, summer. The beach. The pool. The air-conditioned mall. The pre-algebra homework? Students at Anne Chesnutt Year-Round Middle School were among 5,600 Cumberland County youths who returned to the classroom grind Wednesday, almost six weeks ahead of schools on a traditional calendar.

Woodland student Preetveer Kaur has a folder full of work she's done over the past two weeks. While most students use their summer vacation as a way to take a break from math, Kaur is busy graphing, finishing algebra problems and carefully drawing a fractral up to the seventh iteration.
