To help curb the growing number of waste contributed by bottled water- and soda-drinkers at the schools, Madison County Recycling this year began providing bins for recycled plastic bottles and Highland Recycling agreed to pick up recycled plastic at schools. Plastic is an enormous source of waste along with the cardboard.

Forty years ago today the Journal Inquirer became a daily afternoon newspaper and published its first edition, merging the weekly paper that had served the Rockville area (the Journal, founded a hundred years earlier) and the weekly that for the last few years had served South and East Windsor (the Inquirer).

Chiefs win pre-season opener (OurSports Central)

The Spokane Chiefs won the first game of the pre-season, a 4-2 victory over the host Everett Silvertips on Friday night behind a goal and assist from 18-year-old veteran Levko Koper. Rookie goaltender James Reid made 32 saves, including 28 in the second and third periods.
