Group hopes to create coalition to combat teen drinking, drug abuse in Beaufort County

A wreck that killed a 17-year-old girl and severely injured four of her friends last year is prompting a group of Hilton Head Island residents to fight teen alcohol and drug abuse.

A Richland County family court judge decided Wednesday that a 15-year-old accused in a June beating of another teen in Five Points will remain in juvenile court rather than be tried as an adult.

The third in a series of talks about teen substance abuse will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Poway Center for Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. Parents are encouraged to attend with their teens. Guest speakers will talk about the dangers of synthetic and other drugs.
