China has canceled or postponed several military exchanges with the United States in protest against a proposed 6.5 billion dollar arms sale to Taiwan, a Pentagon spokesman has said.

Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- China canceled several military and diplomatic contacts with the U.S. to protest a planned American arms sale worth $6.5 billion to Taiwan, the Associated Press reported, citing Pentagon and State Department officials.

As of Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at least 539 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.
