The European Union's finance ministers gave formal approval on Tuesday, July 8, for Slovakia to begin using the euro. The changeover will take place on January 1, 2009.

MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Fitch Ratings has upgraded Slovakia's long-term foreign currency issuer default rating (IDR) to 'A+' from 'A', after the formal decision it will become the sixteenth member of the euro area from January 2009.
