The European Commission welcomes the European Parliament's second reading vote today in favour of including aviation in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The vote confirms the agreement reached between the Parliament and the Council last month.

European Union lawmakers have agreed to include aviation in the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012. The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of forcing airlines to cut carbon emissions by 3 percent in the first year, and by 5 percent from 2013 onwards.
