Meta-analysis of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies, performed by NREL, weighed emissions estimates per kW-hr from raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, operation, and decommissioning to get optimal comparisons. It found that, from cradle to grave, coal-fired energy releases ~20X as much GHG into atmosphere per kW-hr as solar energy.
